PHOTOGRAPHY SIMPLIFIED: 4.1. HORIZONTAL LINES

TUTORIAL – 4.1
HORIZONTAL LINES

Horizontal lines convey the message of span, rest, peace, tranquility, stability and timelessness like horizon lines of ocean, fallen trees, sleeping people. Horizontal framing of an image enhances  the effect of horizon lines. Layers or rows of horizontal lines produce the sense of rhythm in the image, but may be monotonous also if not broken by placing other shapes like tree, rock, mountain etc. Horizontal lines are generally used in landscapes.

In this picture below visible horizontal lines of wave in foreground and invisible or less visible horizontal lines in the ocean and also horizontal boat create the sense of expansion, tranquility and peace. Two persons seating in the small boat act as vertical line and are breaking the monotony of horizontal lines. In fact different types of lines in a photo should interact in such a manner which enhance the aesthetic value of it.
