VALPARAI – THE SEVENTH HEAVEN
South India is known for its mesmerizing hill stations like Ooty, Munnar, Coorg to name some, apart from these ,there is a lesser know but breathtakingly beautiful hill station VALPARAI in the Anamalai region of western ghats.
Valparai is a hill station in the Coimbatore district of Tamilnadu located 3500 ft above sea level. It can be visited throughout the year but the best time would be between October to March, when the climate is cool. Valparai can be visited between June and August, during this season rains pour life into the waterfalls , the view of dark clouds and rain over the grass hills is a sight to cherish.
Cool misty hills, dense forests, vast tea estates, large number of rare species of birds, rich wildlife and friendly people give Valparai the name Seventh Heaven. Even the road leading to this place is mystical, one has to pass through 40 hair pin bends to reach it, bikers would love to ride on these thrilling roads.
The feeling of the gentle breeze cooling our face when traveling through the roads of this heavenly place is beyond words and has to be experienced in person.
A variety of animal species endemic to western ghats have made valparai’s dense forests and vast tea hills their home. It is believed that these forests are also home to a few tribes. However, the celebrity of this place is the endangered species the Lion-tailed macaque, it ranks among the rarest and most threatened primates. Elephant, Leopard, Brown Palm Civet, Sloth bear, Nilgiri langur, Nilgir thar, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Indian gaur are a few other species of animals found here.
Valparai is also a haven for birds of which Great Indian Hornbill is also one, it is a very large size and a very attractive hornbill. Other birds seen here include Emrald dove, Indian Scimitar Babbler, Malabar Whistling Thrushes, Malabar Trogon , golden serpent eagle, woodpeckers, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Golden fronted leafbird, Chestnut headed bee eater and lots more.
Valparai has a lot in store for landscape photographers too, the mountain-scapes are a delight, this must be the only hill-station having 12 large dams.
